Summer Is Deadly for Teen Drivers

Tell your teen drivers to be extra careful on the roads this summer—it’s the deadliest time of year for our most inexperienced drivers. And car crashes are the top killer of teens in the U.S.

Seven of the 10 deadliest days for teens behind the wheel take place during the summer months, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), including:

May 20

May 23

June 10

July 4

July 9

August 8

August 14

Experts blame distracted driving for many fatal teen crashes—such as sending or receiving text messages while driving, which takes the driver’s eyes off the road for an average of 4.6 seconds.

Other risky driving mistakes teen drivers make include: risk taking, driving without a seat belt, speeding, transporting rowdy riders, using cell phones, messing with music, driving under the influence, and late-night cruising. Peer pressure and overconfidence are also risk factors for teen drivers.

Talk to your teen about safe driving. School may be out, but your teen driver still has a lot to learn.
