Craft cider celebrated during specially designated week

Four years ago, Virginia became the first state to create a specially designated week to celebrate hard cider. This year’s Virginia Cider Week is Nov. 11-20 and includes special tastings, pairings, dinners, events and workshops at cideries across the state.



Stink bug research could bear fruit in a few years

About five years ago the brown marmorated stink bug migrated into Northern Virginia and began damaging the apple crop and other produce. New research is under way at Virginia Tech and a U.S. Department of Agriculture research center in Maryland to lure away the invasive pest by imitating the chemical pheromone it generates when eating.

FDA deems GMO apples and potatoes safe for consumption

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has completed its evaluation for two varieties of genetically engineered apples and six varieties of genetically engineered potatoes and concluded that those foods are as safe and nutritious as their conventional counterparts.
