Keeping Teens Safe on the Job

Part-time jobs are good ideas for most teens. Jobs teach them responsibility and help them earn their own money so they can pay their own way today—or save for something bigger tomorrow.

As your teen is looking ahead to a summer job, you can help make sure they’re as safe as possible at work, whether that job is in a nursing home, at the neighborhood pool, or anywhere else.

1.      Teens are at higher risk for occupational injuries because they tend to be inexperienced and have limited training. Whether heavy machinery or toxic chemicals are on the radar as safety hazards, make sure your teen is properly trained and understands not only risks, but how to prevent accidents.

2.      On a more common sense level, teach your teen to be alert and cautious at work, and they’ll reduce the chances they’ll fall off that ladder while reaching for a box on a high shelf, or even slip on a freshly mopped floor.

3.      Set limits for your teen beyond what the law requires, as needed. For example, your teen might be legally allowed to work until 11 p.m., but if you believe he or she needs to be home by 10 p.m., that’s something you should make clear from the get-go—especially during the school year.

4.      Get the scoop about safety protocols at your teen’s workplace. Is there a security system? When are doors locked? Will there be access to a phone to call a manager, or 911? Will your teen be working alone? Is there a panic button for after-hours emergencies? How much money will your teen be responsible for?

To make the process smoother, before looking for a job, help your teen research things like how many hours and when they’re permitted by law to work, and whether there are restrictions on the types of jobs they’re allowed to do. Once you’re informed, you can help guide your teen to making the best decisions to keep them safe while earning that extra spending money.
