The Toyota Prius may be tops with American consumers looking for a hybrid electric vehicle, but it’s not on the priority list for car thieves.
According to a recent report by the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB), the 2008–2010 Toyota Prius has a significantly lower theft rate than the average for all 2008–2010 models. The rate for Prius is 1 in 606 vehicles, while the average is 1 in 78 vehicles.
The study evaluated all Prius thefts reported to the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) since the first theft on September 4, 2000 through June 30, 2012. In all, there were 2,439 thefts reported. There are currently about 1.2 million Priuses on the road in the United States—about half of all hybrids.
Overall, there has been an increase in Prius thefts each year, with the exception of 2009. This year is also on track for a drop in Prius thefts over 2011.
