The Toyota Camry may be a top-performer in auto sales—it has been the top-selling passenger car in the U.S. for 14 of the last 15 years. And the Toyota Prius dominates hybrid sales—it’s the best-selling hybrid in the world. But they both tanked in a recent crash test with a “poor” rating, the lowest possible score.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) recently released new crash test data for 2013 model midsize cars, including the 2013 Camry and 2013 Prius v.
Interestingly, the 2012 Camry was named a Top Safety Pick by IIHS. So what changed? This year IIHS’s front crash tests were tougher and more realistic, to better simulate what actually happens when a car collides with another vehicle or an object like a pole. The complete test includes five separate measurements: moderate overlap front crash, small overlap front crash, side crash, rollover crash, and rear crash.
Two cars, Honda’s 2013 Accord and Suzuki’s 2013 Kizashi, were given the highest rating of “good” in the new test. Additionally, a total of 11 vehicles were rated “acceptable,” and three were rated “marginal” in the new test.
