Motorcycle Theft: Down, But Not Out

Every 11 minutes, a motorcycle is stolen in the U.S.

Although motorcycle thefts were down 6 percent to 46,667 from 2010 to 2011, according to a new report from the National Insurance Crime Bureau, it’s obviously still a problem.

The top five makes stolen in 2011—which make up for more than 75 percent of all thefts—include:

(1) Honda: 11,014, 24 percent

(2) Yamaha: 8,880, 19 percent

(3) Suzuki: 7,281, 16 percent

(4) Kawasaki: 5,009, 11 percent

(5) Harley-Davidson: 3,120, 7 percent

The top motorcycle stolen in Virginia last year was the 2007 Suzuki, which reported 42 thefts.

Virginia ranked 12th in the U.S. for motorcycle thefts last year with 1,268 total, contributing about 3 percent of the 46,667 thefts across the country. The top five states combine to account for over a third of all thefts in 2011, including California (13 percent), Texas (8 percent), Florida (8 percent), North Carolina (5 percent), and Indiana (5 percent).

Virginia also ranks 12th in the U.S. for number of stolen motorcycle recoveries.
