House To Consider Motorcycle Bill

Motorcyclists are supporting a bill put forward by some state lawmakers, which would allow them to ride side-by-side in a single lane.

It is not currently legal to ride two abreast in Virginia, which is true of only one other state. Virginia Coalition of Motorcyclists counsel Matt Danielson told The Virginian-Pilot that the bill's passage would allow riders to communicate with each other more easily.

Virginia House Delegate Tony Wilt proposed the bill, and has stated that he is aware of no evidence suggesting the practice of riding two abreast compromises safety. Some cyclists have reportedly been pulled over for reckless driving while riding side-by-side, much to their surprise.

Neither those opposing nor those supporting the bill have put forward strong evidence that the practice has a significant effect on safety either way. The measure recently passed a subcommittee and will go before the House Transportation Committee. Unless there is an impact on accident risk and safety, Virginia auto insurance rates are unlikely to be affected.

A spokesman for the state police noted that space between vehicles gives drivers more options, according to the source, suggesting that having motorcyclists close together compromises their ability to maneuver.
