Storm brewing? Look for what could blow down, off or away

RICHMOND—While April showers bring May flowers, those showers also can bring high winds that damage homes, other buildings and property.

“Spring storms can cause a lot of high winds, which can result in a lot of property and building damage,” said Jimmy Maass, safety manager for Virginia Farm Bureau. “While you may think that most damage is caused during storms by rain and lightning, wind is often the culprit.”

Most home damage from windstorms is to roofs, windows and trees.

Now is a good time for homeowners to check their insurance coverage for wind, Maass said. Additionally, there are precautions homeowners can take to ensure their property is storm-ready.

Examine trees for leaning, cracking or decay; mushrooms growing from bark; “V”-shaped forks rather than “U”-shaped ones; or crossing branches that rub or interfere with one another.

“Prune problem areas, and remove diseased, damaged or dead trees,” Maass said. “You also want to trim overgrown shrubs, cut weak branches and remove any overhanging tree branches near structures.”

Clean out gutters, removing any debris that could cause damage during a storm, and secure loose roofing materials such as shingles.

If a storm is imminent, move loose objects in yards and on decks, patios, porches and balconies to a garage or basement. Those items should include light lawn furniture, toys, flags or anything else that could blow away easily, Maass said. Secure larger objects such as heavier grills, outdoor furniture and satellite dishes.

“Unsecured items can become projectiles and cause additional damage, not only to your home, but to your neighbor’s home,” Maass said.
