More Couples Meeting Online

More and more couples today are looking for love online—and finding it. In fact, it’s estimated 1 in 6 married couples today first met on the web. Online dating is now the second-most common way for couples to meet, behind only being introduced through mutual friends.

Just where are couples getting together in cyberspace? Most meet on an online dating site—about 65 percent. The next most popular place is through social networking sites like Facebook, which was the magic spot for 14 percent of couples. Other places include online chat rooms, online gaming and virtual worlds, online forums, bulletin boards, online communities, and through personal/classified ads on the web.

More traditional meet-up methods still rule for modern-day couples, including the most popular method of being introduced by a friend, which accounts for 22 percent of couples who did not meet online. About 18 percent of couples who did not meet online report meeting in college, and 16 percent made their connection while on the job. Couples also report meeting in a bar or club, meeting during childhood or in high school, at a party, through a family member, in church, at a large social event, through shared hobbies, or in a public space.
