Recalled Kenmore Dehumidifiers A Fire Risk

Sears recently announced the recall of 795,000 Kenmore dehumidifiers, which can put consumers at risk for fire and burn hazards. The units can overheat, smoke, melt, and catch on fire. Consumers are advised to immediately turn off, unplug, and stop using the dehumidifiers.

The recall includes 35-, 50-, and 75-pint white plastic units with a Kenmore logo located on the front top, and manufactured between 2003 and 2005. They were sold exclusively by Sears and Kmart nationwide and online from 2003 to 2009, for $140 to $220. Model numbers—which can be found on the right side of the interior, after the front-loading water bucket has been removed—include:

  • 35-pint (2004) – 580.54351400
  • 50-pint (2003) – 580.53509300

  • 70-pint (2004) – 580.54701400
  • 70-pint (2005) – 580.54701500

There have been 107 reports of incidents with the dehumidifier, including smoke inhalation injuries and more than $7 million in property damage.
