Two more states have recently opted to allow drivers to present electronic proof of insurance, bringing the total number of states to 25. Luckily Virginia is among them.
New laws allowing drivers to offer proof of insurance on their smartphones and tablets is certainly a convenience, freeing drivers from worrying about that little slip of paper. It’s also much easier to keep information current and updated. Even if you purchase your insurance policy online, you no longer have to wait for a printed card to arrive—you can have proof of insurance almost instantly. With electronic renewals, you also don’t have to worry about replacing the card, and having an expired card on hand.
The two most recent states to join the trend to allow electronic proof of insurance are Indiana and Florida. They join the following states, which already allow the practice: Alaska, Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Minnesota, Mississippi, North Dakota, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington and Wyoming. Additionally, legislation is pending in Illinois, Missouri, and Wisconsin.
Though having half of states on board is terrific, it’s still not 100 percent. So when you’re traveling to states without this law on the books—which include most of our Virginia neighbors—it’s still recommended that you carry your paper card with you and be prepared to show it if you’re stopped by police.
