Auto insurance rates are affected by driving history, including violations and accidents, but depending on the type vehicle you drive, you could save lives.

Accidents that include sport utility vehicles and pickup trucks are less likely to result in deaths to those driving cars and minivans, according to Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

Technological advancements to both brands of cars have reduced the amount of fatalities from major crashes, The Los Angeles Times Reports. Side air bags, stronger frames and improved front-end energy-absorbing sections of the vehicles have enhanced the safety of larger-sized autos, the new source suggests.

David Strickland, administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration stated to the news source that the automaking industry has made vast improvements in a collaborative effort to ensure the safety of all car owners.

"[The] report by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety is the latest evidence that we are improving safety on America’s roadways," said Strickland.
