Less Obvious Factors To Insurance Rates Still Important

While most people who have spoken to their Virginia auto insurance agent about coverage know that their driving record and car will play a role in their rate, other factors may also be considered.

One factor drivers may not know impacts their auto insurance rates is where they live and where the car is generally parked, according to the Insurance Information Institute. As an example, because of the higher risk of vandalism or accidents, those who live in urban areas of Richmond may pay higher rates than those in a quieter suburb.

While it's not something that can be controlled, a driver's age also plays a role in auto insurance. The III says younger drivers historically have a higher accident risk, and are therefore charged more.

In addition, many insurers also view a consumer's credit score when determining rates. Insurers generally feel that people who pay their bills on time are more responsible, so doing so can actually translate into lower bills.

Many Americans already have relatively stellar scores. Estimates from FICO find that more than 75 million Americans had scores of at least 750 last year.
