MyPlate Turns Two

Do you still miss the food pyramid? It’s now been two years since the federal government replaced the old food pyramid with the updated MyPlate icon as a new-generation symbol for healthy eating.

The MyPlate icon—and its Spanish counterpart, MiPlato—highlights recommended portions from among the five food groups using an actual plate, which is much simpler to understand and put into practice. Tips include:

1.      Make half your plate fruits and vegetables.

2.      Make at least half of your grains whole grains.

3.      Go lean when choosing protein.

4.      Switch to fat-free or low-fat 1% milk.

Remember: Healthy eating is not a diet. It’s about making choices and changes for the rest of your life. Healthy eating helps you feel your best and will even give you more energy—we all can use that! Eating a more balanced diet is also one of the best things you can do to prevent and control many common health problems, including heart disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure.
