In the Cyber Wars, Size Doesn’t Matter

Think your small business is too small to be a target for a cyber attack? Guess again.

Nearly one-third of U.S. small businesses in a recent survey reported they were victims of a cyber attack in the past year. Unfortunately, three-quarters of them were unable to fully restore their data after the attack.

So how are small businesses in jeopardy? The most popular forms of cyber attacks were computer worms and Trojans, at 61 percent of attacks, and unspecified malware, at 22 percent.

What was at risk? For more than half, 59 percent, reputational damage was done. About half, 49 percent, experienced theft of business information. And about half also lost angry or worried customers and suffered network and data center downtime, each at 48 percent.

The takeaway for small business owners is to make sure systems are protected. And the message for consumers is to always take steps to protect your data and information whenever possible—including detecting and responding to breaches as quickly as possible.
