Does Your College Student Have Insurance?

The packing list for college is long. Besides all the things your child needs to be a successful student, you also have to think about packing up a wardrobe, medicines, kitchen supplies, groceries, sports gear, furniture—and more! Just don’t forget to add insurance to the checklist.

For Dorms—Homeowners Insurance: Make sure your student is covered by your homeowners policy, so valuable personal possessions like computers and televisions are protected in a dorm room. Find out whether your policy has limits, and what you can do to close any gaps. Most standard homeowners policies offer some coverage for college students living in campus housing—but it’s always better to check, and to know what’s included. Some expensive items may require extra coverage. You’ll want to make sure your child’s pricey electronics and gadgets are covered.

For Apartments—Renters Insurance: If your child will be living in an off-campus apartment, you may want to consider renters insurance, which will offer coverage for furniture, computers, clothing, and more in the event of theft or destruction by fire or weather. Typically, once a child moves off campus, your homeowners coverage will no longer apply.

Take the time now to evaluate your coverage, and you’ll be able to check one more thing off your to-do list before move-in day. Contact your Virginia Farm Bureau Insurance agent today to learn more.
