Avoid Insurance Pitfalls While Unemployed

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 14 million Americans are currently unemployed. Even though Virginia's unemployment rate of 6.1 percent is below the national average, there are methods to cut costs on auto insurance and maintenance, MoneyTalks reports.

Avoiding scheduled maintenance checks is not recommended, the news source suggests. A missed tune up today may end up costing a car owner hundreds in the future. However, if the maintenance expense is too high at your car dealership, consider taking it to another auto body shop that may charge less.

Some unemployed individuals make the mistake of completely cutting out their auto insurance, which can ultimately cost someone thousands of dollars if an accident ensues. Instead of this, a policy holder should contact their insurance agency and ask which added coverage could be dropped. Comprehensive coverage, for instance, which insures automobiles in case of natural disaster and fires, is a low-risk cut from an insurance policy, the news source states.

Upon employment, it's important that individuals revert back to their original schedules of maintenance and insurance plans.
