Trade speakers touched on factors that can enhance, block exports

Speakers at the eighth annual Governor’s Conference on Agricultural Trade highlighted agreements that could boost agriculture and forestry exports and animal health issues that can hinder them.



Tornadoes wreak havoc on some of state’s farms

One week after eight confirmed tornadoes touched down in Southwest, Central and eastern Virginia, more than 126 farmowner storm claims had been received by the Virginia Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance Co. Supreme Court declines to hear challenge of EPA plan for bay

The U.S. Supreme Court on Feb. 29 declined to hear a challenge to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s “pollution diet” for the Chesapeake Bay, upholding the contested plan for bay cleanup goals for 2025.



USDA, US Chamber foundation to promote ag jobs to veterans

The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced in February a joint agreement with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation to increase employment opportunities in the agricultural sector for military veterans and their spouses.



Meat Matters: Animal Agriculture Alliance debuts campaign

The Animal Agriculture Alliance unveiled on Feb. 1 a campaign focused on promoting the role of meat and poultry in a healthy, balanced diet. The Meat Matters initiative counters claims made by activist groups about the nutritional value of animal protein, as well as the sustainability of meat and poultry production.



Ag groups voice support for bill to standardize GMO labeling

Virginia Farm Bureau Federation is joining the American Farm Bureau Federation and the National Corn Growers Association in supporting a new bill that would streamline biotechnology labeling laws.



Number of US and Va. farms dropped slightly in 2015

There were 2.07 million farms in the United States in 2015, 1 percent fewer than in 2014, according to the National Agriculture Statistics Service. Those farms occupied a total of 912 million acres of farmland, 1 million less than the year before.
