The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services announced Feb. 23 that agricultural mediation services are now available to the commonwealth’s agriculture community through a partnership with the North Carolina Agriculture Mediation Program, or NCAMP, at Western Carolina University. 



New display introduces travelers to state’s farm commodities

Because agriculture is everywhere in Virginia, the Mecklenburg County Farm Bureau Women’s Committee recently presented a colorful map to the Virginia Welcome Center on Interstate 85 South at Bracey to familiarize visitors with the state’s different agricultural regions.

The birthplace of Secretariat at The Meadow Event Park is now the site of a rare memorabilia collection from the early days of Meadow Stable. 




Helping young farmers achieve the American Dream

Producing a valued commodity, working on the land, being your own boss—these are all things that make farming a new version of the American Dream for a lot of young adults. Given that the average age of the American farmer is 58, that’s not a bad thing. That’s why the Virginia Farm Bureau Federation Young Farmers Committee works with several programs that help beginning and young farmers get established in the industry. 




Can derby winner Nyquist maintain streak for two more races?

When the undefeated Nyquist won the Kentucky Derby on May 7, he boosted his winning streak to eight races. His victory also boosted the inevitable speculation on whether he could capture the Triple Crown, which was won for the first time in 37 years by American Pharoah in 2015.
