On Oct. 15 the American Farm Bureau Federation and other organizations representing haulers of livestock, bees and fish submitted a petition to the U.S. Department of Transportation requesting flexibility on hours of service requirements.

Limited-scale aquaculture production for the local market is the theme of the 31st Annual Aquaculture Field Day at Virginia State University. The event will run from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Oct. 17 at the university’s Randolph Farm, 4415 River Road.

Virginia’s shellfish growers should be happy as clams this year. That’s because the Virginia Institute of Marine Science’s July 2018 Virginia Shellfish Aquaculture Situation and Outlook Report said the state’s aquaculture industry is thriving.

Virginia State University’s Aquaculture Program will hold its annual Fish School from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on July 9 and 10 at the university’s Randolph Farm Pavilion near Petersburg.

As state legislators worked to reel in a viable state budget, Virginia’s secretary of agriculture and forestry received industry updates from aquaculture professionals.
