Farm Bureau plays a part in filling your wine glass

Specify Alternate Text
There’s a Virginia wine for every taste and occasion, and Virginia Farm Bureau has supported the industry along the way.

Virginia wineries have grown from 193 in 2010 to more than 260 wineries today. The state’s wine industry contributes more than $1.37 billion annually to the state’s economy, according to the 2015 Economic Impact Study of Wine and Wine Grapes on the Commonwealth of Virginia, commissioned by the Virginia Wine Board and completed in January. That’s an increase of 82 percent from findings of a previous impact study conducted in 2010.

Your Farm Bureau membership helps support laws and regulations that benefit the state’s wine industry.
In recent years, Virginia Farm Bureau has had a role in the following:

  • legislation creating the Virginia Wine Board;
  • support for the Virginia Farm Wineries and Vineyards Tax Credit;e
  • establishment of the Virginia Winery Distribution Co., a nonprofit, non-stock corporation that provides wholesale wine distribution services for Virginia farm wineries;
  • support for Virginia wineries’ ability to ship wines directly to consumers; and
  • legislation preventing local zoning ordinances from discriminating against farm wineries and other farms with agritourism activities.

Additionally, county Farm Bureau offices statewide serve as drop-off points for local wineries’ entries in the State Fair of Virginia’s annual Commercial Wine Competition.
