Every 14 minutes someone is injured in a roadway work zone. That’s nearly 100 per day, and about 37,000 each year, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation.
How can you do your part to help avoid work zone accidents? When traveling through a work zone, drivers should pay extra attention to things like:
• Changes in traffic patterns
• Reduced following distances
• Equipment—both moving and stationary
• Workers who may unexpectedly enter the driving lane
Especially when driving in a work zone where things can change quickly, eliminate additional distractions in your vehicle like talking on your phone, eating, or reaching for objects. Stay focused on the road ahead and the area around you so you’ll be alert for hazards—and hopefully avoid injuring yourself, your passengers, other drivers, or even the workers themselves.
