Women's Heart Attack Signs Are Different

Heart disease is the number 1 killer of women—though many women don’t recognize the signs of heart attack. Why? They’re looking for the wrong symptoms.

 

Men and women experience heart attacks differently. That feeling like an elephant is sitting on your chest? It’s typical to men, not women—though it does happen to some women, it doesn’t happen to all. The most common heart attack symptoms in women are actually shortness of breath, nausea or vomiting, and back or jaw pain. Here’s a full list:

  • Chest pain or discomfort
  • Pressure or pain in the lower chest or upper abdomen
  • Pain or discomfort in one or both arms, neck, jaw, or stomach
  • Upper back pressure
  • Shortness of breath
  • Breaking out in a cold sweat
  • Unusual extreme fatigue
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Light-headedness or dizziness
