Virginia Is Clamping Down on Insurance Fraud

Virginia State Police are arresting more and more people for insurance fraud. A report of 2012 arrests shows a nearly 66 percent increase over 2011.

The Virginia State Police Insurance Fraud Program (IFP) recently released 2012 data, which also showed special agents opened 459 cases—nearly twice the number of cases than 2011. The IPF received a total of 1,976 reports of suspected insurance fraud during the year.

In the program’s 14 years of operation, agents have initiated 4,574 investigations and made 2,468 arrests for insurance fraud and related crimes like arson and forgery. Since the program’s start in 1999, suspected false claims reported to the IFP totaled $147 million—which includes both attempted and collected claims.

The IFP investigates both property and casualty fraud as well as workers’ compensation fraud.
