Virginia Doctor Pushing For Radiation Insurance

Though it is somewhat rarer and less publicized than other common forms of cancer, liver cancer affects millions every year. Radiation, as with other strains of the disease, is often a credible technique used to send liver cancer into remission, though the large expenses are not covered by all health insurance providers.

Doctor R. Fisher, of the department of surgery in Virginia Commonwealth University, told the Deccan Herald that though radiation is often a valid option for American sufferers, liver cancer patients in other nations sometimes do not have access to the technology.

"In India, you have to have an insurance system in place to have such technologically evolved and costly treatment," Fisher said at an international symposium, according to the Herald.

Fisher cited The Lancet's findings explaining liver cancer is the fourth most common cause of death in India, though remission techniques including radiation, transplants and drug eluding beads are just now being implemented in Indian hospitals, the source noted.

The Cancer Facts and Figures 2011 report released by the American Cancer Society estimated the number of deaths caused by various strains of cancer last year. In Virginia, liver cancer was the cause of death for approximately 430 patients, out of the nearly 20,000 that were killed by the disease nationwide.
