As the Senate continues to review and approve aspects of the Farm Bill, Bloomberg reports that U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack wants House Majority Leader Eric Cantor to schedule floor time for the proposed bill.
Vilsack says U.S. farmers and producers need to know more about the programs being considered that support them. House leaders have delayed progress of the agriculture committee to work on the bill draft after July 4, but the current law is set to expire September 30.
"I would ask him to take his finger off the pause button so the rest of us don't have to hit the panic button," Vilsack said at a meeting in Washington, according to the source.
He also noted that farmers need the reassurance that the new bill benefits local farmers. Reduced costs for farmers could lead to increased farm worker hires.
The Senate passed a bill last week that covers food and farm aid that would cut spending by $23.6 billion over the next decade by substituting the current direct-payment program for crops with a revenue guarantee.
