Tornado Drill Scheduled for March 12

Mark your calendar: Virginia has planned a state-wide tornado drill for March 12 at 9:45 AM.

The drill is a joint effort between the Virginia Department of Emergency Management and the National Weather Service, and aims to increase awareness and education so people know what to do when a warning is issued in their area. A tornado warning means a tornado has been sighted or picked up on radar, while a tornado watch means conditions are right for tornadoes to form at any moment.

A total of 62 tornadoes have hit the state in the past two years, killing 10 people, injuring more than 100 people, and destroying dozens of homes and businesses.

Businesses, schools, organizations, and families are encouraged to register for the drill at www.vaemergency.gov.
