As summer is quickly approaching, many families are making plans to go on vacation or visit friends and family while kids are out of school. As the price of airfare continues to increase, many more parents may opt to take a road trip, which means there are some safety tips drivers should follow for a safer journey.
Before setting out for the road trip, drivers should make sure to get the vehicle tuned up and ensure their auto insurance is up-to-date. Auto repair shops often offer road trip check-ups which include checking the tires, battery, fluids and oil.
Longer journeys in the car may mean overnight driving, so taking turns behind the wheel or pulling off to sleep overnight can be the safest option.
Along with plenty of entertainment for children, parents should pack a safety kit for the road.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recommends packing a kit that includes warm blankets, a flashlight, flares, tools to change a tire, a first-aid kit and jumper cables. Many auto insurance companies also offer add on policies that provide roadside assistance, which can be helpful on long-distance road trips.
