Things to know about the 2016 general election

Election Day: Tuesday, Nov. 8

Voter registration ends: Monday, Oct. 17

Early voting/In-person absentee voting: Oct. 29 through Nov. 5

Absentee ballot request deadline – By mail: Nov. 1

Presidential election information: A website created by the American Farm Bureau Federation at election16.fb.org offers farmers critical information on the 2016 presidential candidates. The website highlights the industry’s perspective on the election and documents candidates’—as well as Farm Bureau’s—positions on key farming issues. 

Congressional election information: Virginia Farm Bureau Federation developed questionnaires for Congressional candidates that show where they stand on important agricultural issues. See their answers at VaFarmBureau.org/Policy-Action/Congressional

2016 ballot questions:
Question 1: “Right to Work” Amendment – makes mandatory membership in a labor union illegal. Virginia Farm Bureau has policy supporting Virginia’s right-to-work law. Visit virginiawins.com for more information.

Question 2: Property Tax Exemption for Surviving Spouses of Police and Service Personnel Amendment – provides a local option property tax exemption for a surviving spouse of any law-enforcement officer, firefighter, search and rescue personnel or emergency medical services personnel killed in the line of duty. Virginia Farm Bureau does not have a policy position on this ballot initiative.
