The Benefits of Yoga

Diet and exercise may seem like a modern obsession, with an ever-changing avalanche of fad diets, gadgets, regimens, and gurus constantly focused on helping us get skinnier, healthier, and more fit. But one form of exercise has been a constant for more than 5,000 years—and that’s yoga.

September has been national Yoga Month and you can use the opportunity to discover and learn more about the benefits of this ancient practice and modern-day trend.

  • By focusing on movement and breathing, yoga offers a variety of benefits, including enhanced flexibility, strength, balance, range of movement, posture, and even relaxation. Here are some tips to help you get the most out of yoga:
  • Don’t go solo. An experienced instructor will show you the proper form, so you don’t hurt yourself.
  • Go slow. Be sure you understand the basics of yoga and are physically ready before you try strenuous stretches.
  • Warm up. Before any exercise, it’s always s a good idea to warm up your muscles to help prevent injury.
  • Pay attention. Yoga shouldn’t cause pain. If it hurts, stop.

Because it’s non-aerobic, yoga is safe for most healthy people. As with any physical activity, however, it still has risks, which include overstretching and strain. In addition, you can increase your risk of injury if you have severe osteoporosis, high or low blood pressure, ear problems, or spine problems, or if you are pregnant.

Celebrities do yoga. Professional athletes do yoga. Grandmothers do yoga. Will you?
