Six Virginia Communities Named "Best for Youth"

Six Virginia communities recently ranked among the country’s 100 “Best Communities for Young People,” including Alexandria, Chesterfield County, Hanover County, Newport News, Prince William County, and Surry County.

Each of the six is a multiple-year winner of the “100 Best” distinction. Chesterfield County is a six-time winner—achieving recognition each year the annual award has been given. Alexandria, Hanover County, and Newport News each have been recognized five times. Prince William County this year received its third placement on the list. And Surry County’s 2012 award is its second.

The annual award presented by America’s Promise Alliance recognizes communities for their commitment to the well-being and educational achievement of youth, demonstrated through innovative programs and services like anti-bullying campaigns and mentoring programs to increase high school graduation rates.

More than 320 communities were nominated for the award. Virginia’s six winning communities tied Massachusetts for third place among all 50 states. California ranked first with eight, and Florida was second with seven.
