Whether homeowners are moving into a new house or doing an annual safety inspection, there are many precautionary ways to prevent home fires. The National Safety Council offers homeowners a checklist to ensure a safer living environment.
Eliminating fire hazards is the first step toward a safer home. Homeowners should check electrical appliances for frayed or otherwise deteriorating cords while also making sure outlets aren't overloaded with plugs. Light sources, including lamps and nightlights, should be kept away from fabrics including bedding and drapes while candles should also be isolated from curtains and furniture.
In the kitchen, homeowners are urged to keep an eye on appliances in use, including toasters and ovens. Keeping them unplugged when they aren't in use can also lower the risk of a fire.
Homes that have fireplaces may require additional attention as they increase the risk of an in-home fire. The NSC says homeowners should keep the fireplace clean and covered with a screen while only burning wood, as papers and other materials can easily escape the fireplace, catching surrounding items on fire.
