Severe Weather Increases Risks for Virginia Farmers

Farmers across Virginia are keeping a close watch on weather forecasts these days.

With recent temperature spikes and the driest first half of the year since 2007, most of Virginia is experiencing abnormally dry and moderate drought conditions—though luckily not yet the extreme drought conditions plaguing much of the United States. Unfortunately, the forecast for hot, drier-than-normal weather through the end of the month doesn’t offer any relief.

Severe weather is also a risk. Recent tornadoes and a rare derecho weather phenomenon have recently affected Virginia farmers. On top of that, the Atlantic hurricane season is in full swing, which could bring damaging high winds and power failures along with the albeit much-needed rain.

Now is the time for Virginia farmers to make sure you’re ready to handle whatever Mother Nature has in store. Contact your local Virginia Farm Bureau Insurance agent and Crop Insurance Specialist today to confirm your coverage for potential crop losses, and make sure you know how to track and report any damages to crops or livestock loss.
