Send the Winter Blues Packing

With shorter, colder days, many people develop the winter blues at this time of year. What are the blues exactly? Symptoms include mild depression, lack of motivation, and a decrease in energy.

To get over your case of the blues—or avoid it altogether—try these tips:

1.      Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids—especially water.

2.      Experiment with a new hobby, or restart an existing one.

3.      Try a winter sport, like skiing, snowboarding, or ice skating. Or just plain stay active.

4.      Cut back on your portion sizes, add more fruits and veggies to your plate, and incorporate more complex carbs like whole wheat bread and brown rice into your diet.

5.      Adjust your sleep schedule so you’re going to bed and waking up earlier, and keep it consistent.

6.      Sleep for 7 to 8 hours every night.

7.      Get some sun. If you can’t spend even a little more time outdoors, keep your shades open during the day to let light in, and try sitting near windows during the day.

Many of these tips are good for year-round health and fitness. Who knows, by making some of these simple lifestyle adjustments you just may achieve your new year’s resolution to get healthier.

As always, if you have concerns about your health or possible depression beyond the winter blues, contact your doctor.
