Safeguard Pesticides and Poisons in Your Home

Did you know 90 percent of all poisonings happen in the home?

Each year, more than 145,000 poisonings are reported to U.S. poison control centers for pesticides and disinfectants alone—that’s close to 400 every day on average. That figure includes about 65,000 children age 5 and under who are accidentally exposed to pesticides, and more than 10,000 who come into contact with mouse and rat poison.

Help protect your children from poisons at home by:

• Keeping all pesticides, chemicals, and disinfectants in locked cabinets or in high cabinets that are far from reach

• Using only tamper-resistant bait stations when putting out mouse and rat poison

• Checking each room of our house for poisoning hazards—and correcting them immediately

• Closing child-resistant lids properly after they’re used (it never hurts to double-check!)

• Keeping all chemicals in their original packaging

• Avoiding transferring chemicals into containers that could make them be mistaken for food—like old soda bottles

Finally, you should program the Poison Help Center phone number into your phone, so it’s quickly and easily accessed should you ever have a poisoning emergency: 800.222.1222.
