Safe Driving In The Rain

Having proper auto insurance is a good precaution for drivers, but some weather conditions can still compromise their ability to drive safely. Edmunds offers tips and techniques for driving in the rain.

If heavy rainfall comes after a dry period, engine oil and grease have likely had time to build on on roads and the addition of water can cause roads to be even more slick. The source notes that while the rain will eventually wash this layer of slippery substances away, it may be safest to stay off the road during the first hours of rainfall.

Drivers are also advised to drive at a much slower pace when its raining or when roads are wet, as traffic is almost always moving slowly when the weather is bad. Severe weather could also result in flooding, which could mean detours and increased travel time.

When braking, Edmunds recommends applying less force while and doing so earlier than normal to increase stopping distance. Drivers should also be sure to use turn signals and take their time when crossing lanes in traffic.
