A new report from CarMd shows many states experienced a drop in repair costs in 2011, while these expenses were fairly pricey in Virginia.
The state-by-state ranking of car repair costs reveals drivers living in Wyoming paid the most for repairs in 2011 while Indiana drivers paid the least.
According to the report, titled the "Vehicle Health Index," the average cost of U.S. check engine-related auto repairs in 2011 was $333.93. While the majority of the costs is parts, $118.61 of the average covered labor. This may seem high to drivers, the figure is actually down 6 percent from repair costs reported in 2010, as labor costs have fallen throughout the economic downfall.
Other factors including weather have had an impact on the average cost of damages to vehicles and drivers who ignore small issues typically end up with larger, more expensive problems.
"We are encouraged to see overall repair costs trending down this year but recognize that drivers are still putting off small repairs such as spark plugs and oxygen sensors that can quickly turn into more serious problems," said Art Jacobsen, vice president of CarMD.
While many drivers opt to pay out of pocket for the cost of these repairs, having a substantial auto insurance policy can be helpful in covering the cost of major repairs.
