Prepare Now For Winter Conditions

We saw the first true cold snap of the season this weekend, a sign of the looming winter. Cooper Tire and Rubber Company recently recommended drivers install winter tires now, before storms hit. Once ice and snow begins to fall, the best chance to prepare for seasonal weather and its impact on driving is already past.

Winter tires may be designed with snow grooves or other technologies that can improve traction in adverse conditions, increasing safety and helping auto owners get where they're going quickly. When purchasing winter tires, drivers should keep in mind they will only reap the full benefits if all four tires are replaced. Individual vehicle models may have additional winter weather concerns or preparations not common to all automobiles.

Proper driving tactics, such as allowing additional room for braking and reducing speed, can also help compensate for the weather. Similarly, it is a good idea to check tires for air and perform other routine maintenance at the same time. Tasks like that may be easily forgotten, but can make a difference.

Failure to prepare properly may increase the chances of an accident, or the likelihood it will be severe. Snow and ice make skidding and unintentional swerving much more likely, with potentially damaging effects on drivers' health, vehicles and auto insurance rates.
