Pedestrian Safety On The Road

After the heat and humidity of the summer, Virginians are eager to get back outside and enjoy a morning run or an after-dinner walk. Whether your sneakers are squeaky-new or well-worn, it’s always important to keep safety in mind.

Did you know pedestrians should always travel on the left side of the road, against oncoming traffic? This helps ensure you can see what drivers are doing—so you can react. Distracted drivers are your biggest threat. You just never know which drivers might not be paying attention. When possible, pedestrians should also use sidewalks and crosswalks. Especially in areas without them, staying alert is key.

To help drivers see you in the early morning, evening, and when it’s dark, all pedestrians should wear reflective clothing and use lights.

Motorists and bicyclists are required to yield to pedestrians—but you also need to do your part by following safety recommendations.
