Do you use your cellphone when driving with your kids in the car? If you do, you’re not alone. Nearly two-thirds of adults report doing the same thing.
A new survey revealed most adults use their cellphones when driving with their children in the car, and about one-third text as well. People with children younger than 11 in the car were significantly more likely to text or talk on a handheld phone, according to the survey.
And the talking isn’t just for fun or to catch up on the latest gossip. Nearly one-third of the drivers said they felt obligated to take work-related calls while driving.
The risks in this behavior are obvious, considering studies have shown using your phone while driving increases the risk of crashes by four times—the same as driving with a blood alcohol level at the legal limit of .08.
The California study featured more than 500 drivers who said they drive an average of one to two hours a day. Of the drivers in the study, 56 percent said they drive with a handheld phone and 92 percent with a hands-free phone.
