More Moms Are Bringing Home the Bacon

These days, moms are the sole or primary breadwinner in 4 out of 10 U.S. households with children. That’s quite a shift from just a few short generations ago in 1960 when only 11 percent of households had breadwinning mothers.

The shift is attributable to the increase in the number of single moms—who make up two-thirds of breadwinning moms. The other one-third of breadwinning moms are married and earn more than their spouses. Interestingly, single mom–led families earned a median $23,000 a year in 2011, while families in which the married mom earns more than her husband bring home a median $80,000 a year.

And though this U.S. Census data reveals many moms are bringing home the bacon, a new study from the Pew Research Center reveals attitudes. In the Pew survey, fully 51 percent of respondents believe children were better off when a mom stays home with the kids. Only 8 percent said the same about stay-at-home dads.

The Pew survey also revealed half of respondents said women in the workplace has put marriages at risk by making it harder for marriages to succeed, although two-thirds said working moms make it easier for families to live more comfortably.
