July A Tough Month For SUVs

Three major auto companies announced SUV recalls in recent weeks—including Hyundai, Mazda, and Ford—involving nearly 1 million vehicles.

Hyundai Motor Co. just announced a recall of more than 200,000 Santa Fe SUVs due to airbag issues, including sensor defects and spontaneous deployment. Santa Fes from model years 2007 to 2009 are affected. The recall also includes about 22,500 Sonata sedans from model years 2012 and 2013.

The same day, Mazda Motor Corp. announced a recall of more than 217,000 Tribute SUVs because their throttles can stick, making it difficult to slow down or stop. Tributes from model years 2001 to 2006, and the 2008 model year, are affected. The problem impacts Tributes’ 3-liter, V6 engines and cruise control systems—whether the cruise control is used or not.

Just 2 days before Hyundai and Mazda, Ford Motor Co. announced a huge recall of more than 484,000 Ford Escape SUVs because their throttles can be stuck open, due to an issue with the cruise control cable. Escapes from the model years 2001 to 2004 with 3-liter, V6 engines are affected. Close to 425,000 of the vehicles are in the United States.

Ford also recently announced a recall of about 11,500 new Escapes due to a fire risk related to fuel lines. Escapes from the 2013 model year with a 1.6-liter EcoBoost engine are affected. Only about 4,800 of the vehicles were sold. Owners are advised to stop driving the vehicles immediately, and are asked not even to drive them to dealerships for repair—keep them parked and contact a dealer for assistance.

And in mid-July, 2013 model year Ford Escapes were again featured in a recall, this time for improperly installed carpeting that could interfere with use of the brake pedal. About 10,500 vehicles, including almost 8,300 in the United States, are included.

These recalls occurred following several SUV recalls in June, including Jeep Liberty, BMW X5, Audi Q5, Chevrolet Captiva, Lexus RX350 and RX450h, and Isuzu Amigo and Rodeo Sport models.

If you are affected by any of these recalls, contact your dealer right away for information and assistance.
