Is There a Brain-controlled iPad in our Future?

Most of us are still wrapping our heads around today’s technology, so it’s hard to even imagine what the future holds. Already there are many gadgets controlled by motion and voice activation (“Call Mom’s cell”), but what about a tablet that actually reads your mind? At technology behemoth Samsung, testing is under way to do just that in their Emerging Technology Lab.

Working with an electrical engineering professor from the University of Texas, the company is testing mind control as a way to open apps, power a tablet on and off and play a favorite tune…all by simply thinking about it. Today, brain-controlled computers require the user wear a head cap covered in EEG-monitoring electrodes. In the future, the interface will advance and become less cumbersome, perhaps like a headset which is already being marketed by a company named NueroSky.  This product is currently used for recreational and educational purposes.

So what types of opportunities would brain-activated tablets create?  For the average Joe, it would eliminate finger swiping and other manual interaction.  However, for those with physical disabilities, paralysis or other mobility challenges, this new technology could open up a new world of interaction and communication.  Just imagine…
