When it comes to safety, many grandparents are having trouble keeping up with the times. A recent study showed grandparent caregivers aren’t up to speed on important safety guidelines for children like how infants should sleep, crib safety, and how to use a car seat.
When asked about correct sleep positioning for infants, fewer than half of grandparents answered correctly: on their backs.
Nearly half of grandparent caregivers in the study thought having things like bumpers, stuffed animals, and blankets in cribs was safe—although the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends against it. About a quarter of grandparents surveyed also weren’t aware of current standards for rear-facing car seats, which are recommended for children until age 2.
The number of grandparent caregivers is on the rise. Since 2000, it’s up about 20 percent to 2.8 million grandparents who regularly care for their grandchildren.
Obviously this lack of safety smarts could have dangerous implications for kids. If your parents are taking care of your children, take the time to make sure they’re educated about modern safety standards—many things have changed since you were a child, and may even have changed since their older grandchildren were younger.
When it comes to safety, don’t take chances.
