Business leaders recently met with government officials at the Governor's Transportation Conference in Virginia to discuss the state's transportation systems, The Daily Press reports.

According to the source, the conference is meant to be an opportunity to discuss potential projects such as the expansion and rehabilitation of the Midtown and Downtown tunnels, alternative fuel infrastructure and other matters related to the future of transportation statewide.

Among those attending were Virginia Secretary of Transportation Sean Connaughton, who discussed statewide projects and transportation funding.

"This is an exciting time for transportation in Virginia. With our nearly $4 billion transportation plan advanced by the General Assembly earlier this year, the public and private sector are working together to make critical investments in Virginia's roads, rail, transit, port, aviation and spaceport," Governor Bob McDonnell said in a statement.

The transportation plan set aside funding for more than 900 distinct highway construction and maintenance projects, among other efforts. The scope of the projects could change traffic patterns in the state, with a corresponding effect on risk statistics and auto insurance rates.
