Many families take to the outdoors more than usual during the summer, and many outdoor activities include fires. While camping and grilling can be fun, it is important to follow remember tips provided by the U.S. Fire Administration to ensure a safe summer.
Propane and charcoal grills should always be used outdoors, as using operating them inside could result in a fire. This could also expose those enjoying the food to toxic gases.
Grills should also be placed safely away from areas of heavy traffic and distant from yard area where children and pets are running around. Using long-handled tools and wearing short sleeves can also ensure the person grilling is safe from heat and flames produced by the grill.
Fire pits can be great for those living in Virginia regions that still have cool nights, but they can be a major fire hazard. They should be kept away from all flammable materials and flammable fluids should not be used to start or maintain the fire. Keeping a fire extinguisher or garden hose nearby is necessary should the fire get out of control.
Also, when building a campfire, it is important to do so in a location at least 15 feet from flammable object and extinguish it completely when done using it.
