It’s August, and that means squeezing in one last trip to the beach, shopping for school supplies, and celebrating Back to School Safety Month. Now’s the best time for parents to focus on school safety, and talk with their children before they head back to the classroom.
If your children walk or bike to school, Safe Kids USA recommends parents walk the route with kids before the start of the year. Check out any changes, talk about potential hazards, and make sure to choose a route that minimizes traffic crossings.
For kids who ride the school bus, take time to review bus safety rules. One of the most important rules is to always cross the street in front of the bus, about 10 feet away—for kids, that’s about 5 giant steps. Kids should also wait to get on the bus until the driver says it’s safe. Once on the bus, children need to go straight to their seats, sit facing front, stay quiet, and listen to the driver.
Parents, too, should remind themselves about school safety. Remember to slow down in neighborhoods and school zones, and take extra time to look for kids who may be crossing the street. Stay alert for children on and near the road—especially during morning and after school hours. And use extra caution when entering and exiting driveways and alleys.
