February is National Chocolate Lover’s Month, and what better way to celebrate than by preparing a delicious chocolate dessert for someone you love?

This recipe for a classic chocolate pound cake comes from the Virginia Farm Bureau cookbook, Country Treasures. Topped with fresh or frozen berries, whipped cream or your favorite glaze, this is sure to be a sweet treat.


Chocolate Pound Cake

1 cup butter, softened
½ cup shortening
3 cups sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla
5 eggs
3 cups flour
½ teaspoon baking powder
½ teaspoon salt
6-8 tablespoons cocoa powder
1 cup milk

Preheat oven to 325°. Grease and flour a 10" tube pan.

Blend butter, shortening, sugar and vanilla. Add eggs, one at a time, beating thoroughly after each addition. Sift together flour, baking powder, salt and cocoa, and add to butter mixture alternately with milk.

Pour batter into prepared pan, and bake approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in cake comes out clean.
