Car Care Basics Important This Time Of Year

The Car Care Council recommends drivers take some time to check their vehicles' lights and wipers, particularly with winter's weather and shorter daylight arriving. Visibility and ensuring drivers can see each other clearly are particularly important with night falling earlier, according to the organization.

Drivers are advised to replace any failing or failed lights, including headlights, turn signals, and interior readouts for the driver as well. Malfunctioning lights may dim, blink, or fail to work completely. They may also be functional, but obscured by dirt and debris that prevents other drivers from seeing them. Drivers may wish to check that their headlights are properly aimed as well.

"Lights and wipers play a critical role in safe driving, as the chance of an accident increases if you can’t see or be seen," said Care Care Council executive director Rich White. He noted drivers should check externally, since their vantage point from the driver's seat may cause them to miss something.

The reminder also pointed out windshield wipers can be worn away by both winter weather and particularly sunny conditions. A lack of proper maintenance can increase the risk of collisions, with potential consequences including injury, property damage and higher insurance rates following a crash.
