Low prices make for a tough year for dairy farmers

Virginia’s dairy industry faces a tough year ahead. “It’s going to be a tough year for the dairy sector with probably the lowest prices since 2010,” predicted Dr. John Anderson, American Farm Bureau Federation’s deputy chief economist. 



Spring picnic foods more affordable than last year

If you’re shopping for spring picnic supplies, expect to be pleasantly surprised. Lower retail prices for several foods included in the American Farm Bureau Federation’s annual spring picnic marketbasket survey resulted in a slight decrease for the overall cost. 




Farm profits down as 2015 ends

America’s farmers probably will see lower profits this year, according to the latest forecast by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Economic Research Service. And Virginia farmers are likely to be among them.

Virginians will be able to feed their families a Thanksgiving meal for less than $4.50 per person this year, according to an informal price survey conducted by the Virginia Farm Bureau Federation.



Cotton harvest ‘a very mixed bag’ after wet weather

There will be no record cotton crop in Virginia this year. Heavy rains the weeks of Sept. 27 and Oct. 4 knocked significant yields off this year’s cotton harvest, although not enough to declare crop disasters, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service.



Study finds Va. dairy industry’s economic impact is significant

Virginia’s dairy industry accounted for about $2.3 billion in economic output in the commonwealth last year and employed nearly 8,000 people.



State’s winter wheat production down more than one-fifth

Virginia farmers harvested 13.9 million bushels of winter wheat this past summer—22 percent less than in 2014 and 2 percent less than an August forecast.



Farmers spent close to $400 billion on 2014 production costs

U.S. farmers spent $397.6 billion on agricultural production in 2014, up 8.3 percent from 2013. That’s the largest increase since 2008, according to the Farm Production Expenditures Annual Summary, published by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.



Bull, beef industry prices are up nationwide

While droughts in 2011 and 2012 decreased cattle herds across the country, the beef industry is now enjoying an increase in demand and price—particularly prices for breeding bulls.
